'The Good German' ranks high on Oscar expectations

An intriguing plot and a strong star cast might well propel Academy Award winner Steven Soderbergh's historical thriller 'The Good German' into the list of Oscar contenders for 2007.

An adaptation of Joseph Kanon's novel by the same name, the film stars Hollywood stalwarts George Clooney (in picture), Cate Blanchett and Tobey Maguire among others and has been shot in black-and-white.

The film's action takes place in the ruins of post-World War II Berlin, where US Army war correspondent Jake Geismar (Clooney) meets former lover Lena Brandt (Blanchett), whose missing husband is the object of a manhunt by both the American and Russian armies.

Intrigue mounts as Geismar tries to uncover secrets Lena may be hiding in her desperation to get herself and her husband out of Berlin.

Enter Tully (Maguire), a soldier in the American army who is assigned to drive Geismar around Berlin. Tully has black market connections that may be the only way out for Lena - or lead the trio into even darker territory.

Slated for release next year, 'The Good German' commenced production in September this year, a Warner Bros release said.

Cate Blanchett, who picked up an Academy Award last year for her supporting role in 'The Aviator,' is best known for her Oscar-nominated performance in Shekhar Kapoor 's epic 'Elizabeth.'

Indian fans would also like to catch a glimpse of the young Tobey Maguire, whose 'Spiderman' series created quite a storm at the desi box-office.
