Richard Gere spearheads AIDS campaign in India

Hollywood actor, social activist Richard Gere is in India, furthering the AIDS awareness campaign that he began in Mumbai three years ago.

It was in 2002 when the ‘Pretty Woman’ actor started his campaign ‘A Time For Heroes’ with several film personalities and socialite Parameshwar Godrej.

Last weekend, Gere was in Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh), to take forward his AIDS awareness campaign in the South Indian states where the HIV risk is believed to be prominent.

Gere was joined by AP Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and top stars from south Indian film industry including Kamal Haasan , Mohan Babu , Madhavan , Vikram , Revathy , Amla, Chiranjeevi , Nagarjuna , Venkatesh, Ramya , Sada, Jayaram and Navya Nair .

Also present was the tennis sensation Sania Mirza.

The four-hour event, held at Indoor Stadium at Gachhibowli, Hyderabad, saw performances from HIV/AIDS patients, children and movie stars.

Prior to the performances, Gere addressed the gathering and appealed to the “creative people” to come together for the cause.

He also expressed his admiration for the way film fraternity has rallied behind him for the cause.

“You can change anything in partnership with others. I am very proud of the acting community for coming forward. We don't have to rely on the Government to do everything. The beauty is in the effective community response towards fighting the disease,” Gere said.

The event concluded with the song ‘We Are One’ sung in Tamil and English. Gere also joined the chorus.

Gere was also presented with a shawl from Tirupati Temple by Mohan Babu.
