Madonna gets a glimpse of real Mumbai

The international pop icon did not visit any of the popular tourist spots in Mumbai. Rather, she chose unlikely places that reflect the true face and culture of the city.

After an extended holiday in Rajasthan, Madonna, her husband and film director Guy Ritchie, and their three children flew to Mumbai by a chartered flight on Tuesday morning.

But instead of taking a sightseeing tour of the city’s hot spots, Madonna opted to get up, close, and personal with Mumbaikars to get a true picture of the city.

Dressed in a black T-shirt, jeans and jacket, the multiple Grammy winning pop queen decided to visit Mumbai slums instead.

Accompanied by Ritchie, Australian author Gregory Roberts, and safely cordoned by a horde of bodyguards, Madonna visited the congested Ambedkar Nagar slums.

Gregory Roberts, the author of bestselling autobiographical novel ‘Shantaram’, had himself been a slum dweller in the area in his early days in Mumbai.

Shown around by Roberts, Madonna and Ritchie walked through the narrow and labyrinthine lanes in the slum, where some of the dwellers showered rose petals on them. Madonna was visibly moved by the sight of people and children living in squalid conditions. She was even seen entering a fisherman’s shanty to have a chat with the family.

Later on, Madonna decided to get a taste of the city’s cuisine. Once again guided by Roberts, Madonna and her hubby went to a road-side South Indian restaurant and tried dishes such as sambhar, idli, vada, masala dosa and misal pav.

And knowing that a trip to Mumbai remains incomplete without a brush with Bollywood, Madonna also visited the sets of Sunil Shetty’s production ‘EMI’ ( Easy Monthly Installment ) to see the film’s shooting. Though the film’s main star Sanjay Dutt was not present, producer Sunil Shetty played the perfect host and chatted with the 49-year-old pop sensation about the workings of the industry.

Madonna also visited a Mumbai church with husband.
