Danny Boyle does his bit for Mumbai slum kids

The movie that has catapulted Boyle to new fame and has already got Golden Globe nominations with hopes still intact for an Oscar call as well, featured a host of Mumbai slum kids. Boyle has now set up a trust fund to help these kids rise above the abject poverty that shackles them.

Reports have it that local children will have access to the fund once they finish their school education.


Boyle still remembers the kids he worked with while shooting 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

"Rabina (who plays young Latika) and Azza (Azharuddin, who plays a young Salim) were from very poor backgrounds. One night we heard a rumour that Azza's house had been demolished...We sent people to try to find him, and they found him asleep on a car rooftop," Boyle is quoted as saying by Contactmusic.com.

Boyle added that he is still in touch with the kids. Some of the slum kids even sent him greeting cards on his birthday.

"They're learning English, and they sent me birthday cards. I started weeping when I opened them," Boyle said.

Meanwhile, 'Slumdog Millionaire' is still going strong at the US box office. The film recently won the best cinematography prize by the National Society of Film Critics. It has also earned a Best Picture nomination from the Producers Guild of America.
