Among aspirants in the competitive jungle of film industry to have gained a foothold without much struggle is Amrita Rao .

An exception in the unforgiving tinselville where aspirants are obliterated without a second chance, Amrita desired to pursue clinical psychology but chose the greasepaint and was very gung-ho about it.

After a shaky start with Raj Kanwar 's Ab Ke Baras, she almost vanished from the starry horizon like stars at the dawn of the day.

But Ken Ghosh's Ishq Vishq , which fell in her lap, brought her back from the edge of the abyss.

''It is sheer destiny that I am in the film industry. I am lucky I did not have to struggle much in the industry, though I had no filmi background or connections. Things just fell in place and I could gain a foothold in the industry in such a short span of time,'' gushed Amrita while talking to reporters in Chandigarh recently.

Amrita, who has around 35 TV commercials to her credit, said,'' I had always been fascinated by films and somewhere deep down I knew that one day I would join the films.''

An ardent fan of Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan , Amrita, who was in Chandigarh for a fashion show, said,'' Though I did ' Deewar -Let's Bring Our Heroes Home' with Mr. Bachchan, I did not have even one scene with him in the film. But I hope one day I will be sharing screen space with him.''

When every actress nowadays is shedding clothes like there is no tomorrow, is she game for skin-show? Amrita retorted,'' I am not averse to doing item numbers in films. I even liked Isha Koppikar 's 'Khallas' number in Company and Lara Dutta 's 'Aisa Jadoo' in Khakee . But as far as exposure on screen is concerned, it is a big no-no for me. The instant fame one gets by shedding clothes is fickle and does not last in the long run. Other actresses may be outdoing each other in skin-show, but it is not my cup of tea.''

This nubile nymphet, who has also done films like The Legend of Bhagat Singh , in which her performance as Bhagat Singh's fiancée did come in for praise, Masti and Main Hoon Na , opined,'' Acting is something you cannot learn from books. It is something spontaneous. I am still learning the ropes and am yet to climb many rungs of the ladder of success.'' Amrita , who has three films, including Mahesh Manjrekar 's 'Life Ho To Aisi', in the pipeline, described herself as ''subdued'' and a ''homely girl'', who loves to spend her time in her ''home sweet home''.

Asked about her co-stars, she was all praise for Ajay Devgan and Sanjay Dutt , whom she described as ''focussed'', ''down-to-earth'' and ''very warm''.

Among her pastimes, top on the priority list are -- long drives and having coconut water. '' I also love reading, but do not have the patience to read thick novels. And my favourite holiday destination is Cape Town in South Africa,'' she signed off.
