SCOOP!! & NEWS Netaji indeed a forgotten hero: Benegal18th May 2005 12.30 IST By PTI Dismissing the controversy on his latest film, veteran director Shyam Benegal maintains that Netaji Subhash Bose indeed is a forgotten hero. "Why is that nobody as yet thought of making a film of Netaji," Benegal asks answering the question himself "One reason why nobody tried to make a film on Bose was because people were afraid to deal with the subject," says Benegal talking to a news agency in New Delhi on Tuesday.
"I chose the word forgotten because people outside Bengal hardly know what Bose did for our country. His achievements are not known to many and I wanted to correct this impression," he says. Facing criticism from some section on showing the marriage of the legendary freedom fighter, Benegal defends himself by saying that he has done the best possible research for the movie. "Some people are disputing the fact that he was married. We went to places where best possible research could be done on Netaji," he says. Over the years Benegal has pioneered parallel cinema, showing the stark realities of life. But his love of recreating a bygone era drives him to make period moves. "Recreating a period is a challenge for me. I personally have always enjoyed making a period film," says Benegal. "Period movies are not new to me I have made them in the past.
