'Rang De Basanti' has a good chance at Oscars : Aamir Khan

In Aamir Khan ’s opinion, the only Hindi film that comes close to giving Rang De Basanti a competition for the Oscar entry is ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’. But now that ‘Rang De Basanti’ has been selected as the Indian entry to the Oscars, Aamir is gearing up to make sure the film is properly lobbied to get a nomination.

Aamir was on the sets of his current production ‘Tare Zameen Par’ (Stars on the Earth) when he got the good news from producer Ronnie Screwvala. ‘Rang De Basanti’, the movie that had stirred the nation early this year and elicited a soul-searching in today’s youth, had been selected as the Indian entry for the Academy Awards to be held in the first quarter of 2007.

The movie beat other strong contenders like Lage Raho Munnabhai , Omkara , Krrish and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna to become the official Indian entry to the Oscars.

And none is more elated that Aamir (the main actor in the movie), Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra (the director), Ronnie Screwvala and others in the RDB team.

“I feel very happy that the film has been selected. Although the real honour has already been given by the Indian public who have liked the movie immensely, but an Oscar entry is certainly a deserved honour for this well-made film,” says Aamir.

Aamir says in his opinion it was a tough call to choose between ‘RDB’ and ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’.

“Raju Hirani has made such a good film and if I had to choose between the two films, I won’t be able to. Both the films are immensely entertaining and both have touched today’s youth in their own ways,” says Aamir.

Looking forward, Aamir will now bring to bear his experience of promoting ‘Lagaan’ at the Oscars a few years back. Although the film did not win the award, it was nominated in the Best Film in a Foreign Language category.

“We have to make sure that maximum number of Academy members see the film (RDB). And we will do the necessary publicity and promotion to make sure that the film is noticed by many people there,” says Aamir.

Ask him about the chances of RDB getting a nomination and Aamir gives an optimistic smile.

“It has a very good chance,” he says.

Apart from Oscars, RDB is also contending for BAFTA and Golden Globe Awards.
