Sanjay Leela Bhansali hits back at critics

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali strongly stands by his latest film Saawariya , which has been slammed by critics.

Bhansali’s latest film, a love story set in a dark and surreal world, has got mixed response from critics. Only a handful of them have praised the film while most of them have panned it as “an opulent cinematic work of a self-indulgent director”.

The director himself seems unruffled by such criticism and is hitting back at the critics, who, he thinks, are not fit to evaluate ‘Saawariya’. Bhansali even named popular critics like Taran Adarsh and Komal Nahata in his tirade.

“Only a handful of critics are trying to influence the audience against the film…Komal and Taran belong to the cinema of the eighties, they are antiquated and I never expected them to understand ‘Saawariya’. Great cinema should be kept away from such reviewers,” Bhansali said in an interview to Mid-Day.

Bhansali even took a potshot at Om Shanti Om . He told the tabloid: “Gags and jokes at senior actors do not make a film great. Cinema is not about laughing at legends.”

The filmmaker also expressed his disappointment at Shah Rukh Khan for saying that he will destroy any competition with ‘OSO’.

As of now, Bhansali is not admitting that ‘Saawariya’ is solely riding on a good box-office opening of Diwali weekend. He claims there are people who are genuinely liking the film.

Here we cannot disagree with Bhansali. It is true that if there are people who hated ‘Saawariya’, there are also those who came out of the halls, spellbound by the film’s visual beauty.
