Nobody has challenged me more as an actor than Ramu: Amitabh Bachchan

Though his last two films with director Ram Gopal Varma bombed at the box office, Bollywood mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan says nobody has challenged him more as an actor than Varma.

"My earlier films with him, Nishabd and 'Aag' ( Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag ), received a lot of harsh criticism from critics and audiences. But as an actor both were challenging roles for me.

Nobody has challenged me more as an actor than Ramu," Bachchan said at a press conference Sunday night in Mumbai to unveil the first look for Sarkar Raj .

The film, said to be a sequel to the hit Sarkar directed by Varma, has Bachchan, his son Abhishek Bachchan and daughter-in law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starring in it. The film is scheduled to release on June 6.

'Sarkar Raj' is a tribute to the spirit, strength and guts of the filmmaker who has made this film despite the criticism he has received in the past, Bachchan said.

"When you hit a person when he is down and out, he is going to stand up only if he is really good," Bachchan said.

Bachchan added that he was always an admirer of Ramu's work and being part of 'Sarkar' was an historic moment for him.

"Working in 'Sarkar Raj' was naturally an happy moment because I get to share screen space with Aishwarya and Abhishek. Working with family has its advantages and disadvantages. It is a test not just for the actors concerned but also the filmmaker who has to do justice to all the three roles," the Big B noted.

In Sarkar Raj, 'Sarkar' (Bachchan) takes a backseat while his son Shankar Nagre (Abhishek) holds fort. Ash who plays the CEO of Sheppard Power, an international power company, brings a proposal to set up a power plant in rural Maharashtra, before the Nagres.

An insightful Shankar is quick to realize the benefits of the power plant that can bring to the people. After convincing Sarkar (Bachchan) who is against it for various reasons, Shankar undertakes a journey along with Ash to villages of Maharashtra to mobilise support of the masses.

However, things are not what they seem to be. Shankar's dream project gradually becomes a political minefield. It is in this backdrop that the evil forces mightier than ever, mushroom and gang up to bring down Sarkar's regime and obliterate Shankar's name from the political horizon.

The function held on Sunday coincided with the first wedding anniversary of Abhishek and Ash, who also participated in the press conference through video conferencing.

When asked whether she essays the role of Rebecca Mark, the CEO of Enron in 'Sarkar Raj', Ash said that her role is based on Ramu's script.

The actress is currently at Miami where she is holidaying with hubby Abhishek to celebrate their first wedding anniversary.

Abhishek said his father does not act, but lives the roles he essays. "He makes me feel how inconsequential I am as an actor," he said.
