'Dev. D' would be a revelation: Abhay Deol

Anurag Kashyap , the maverick filmmaker for whom a stereotype is worst than plague, has given a new garb to the story of self-pitying Devdas. Instead of making a period costume drama a la Bhansali’s Devdas , Kashyap has adapted the story to the present time, much to the taste of Gen-X.

And Abhay, who plays the self-destructive protagonist, feels the experiment would work with audiences.


“'Devdas' has been made before, but this one has a very new, fresh and out-of-the-box approach. Nobody had ever thought of making 'Devdas' in this contemporary way,” Abhay is quoted by a news agency.

The actor is confident that the new treatment to the old story would click.

“'Dev D' adopts an unusual and contemporary approach and I think that is exactly what will work for the film because it will be like a revelation to the people. It's always good to turn a stereotype image and experiment with it,” Abhay added.

Even director Anurag Kashyap has told the agency that he scripted the film “on the basis of news headlines on the Gen-X”.

In ‘Dev. D’, Abhay plays the son of a rich industrialist. He returns from London to find his childhood crush Paro ( Mahi Gill ) married to another man. He finds solace in drinks and drugs and meets a prostitute Chanda ( Kalki Koechlin ) who was kicked out of her home after an MMS sex scandal at early age.

Instead of Kolkata, the film has been shot in Delhi and Punjab.

‘Dev. D’ releases on February 6.
