'New York' will sweep popular awards: John Abraham

Wed, Jun 24, 2009 14:45 IST

John Abraham John Abraham is pretty confident that director Kabir Khan will walk away with many popular awards for his film New York which releases this Friday.

The film, set around the 9/11 attacks on America, tells the story of a bunch of friends who become terror suspects and eventual victims of a prevalent prejudice in America against the people of certain community or religion. John, who's working with Kabir Khan for the second time after Kabul Express , says he's sure the film will sweep many awards.

"When we were shooting in Afghanistan for 'Kabul Express' and bullets were flying off our heads, I had told Kabir that you would get a National Award for this film. And he did get one (for best debut director). After watching 'New York', which is a very commercial film, I told Kabir that he will walk away with every popular award that exists," John is quoted by a news agency as saying.

The actor was in Delhi along with co-star Katrina Kaif to promote the film ahead of its release.

John even compared 'New York' to the Pakistani blockbuster Khuda Ke Liye which tackled the issue of terrorism and detention of terror suspects.

"In its own strange way, 'New York' begins where 'Khuda Ke Liye' ended. That's the interesting part of the film...Each director has his own way of interpreting and researching the plight of legal detainees...Kabir and the 'Khuda Kay Liye' director have different interpretations of it in their films," John said.

The star, who got critical acclaim for his comedy in Dostana , says his role in 'New York' is another stepping stone on his way to be a complete actor.

"For me, there is a silent determination to be accepted by everyone in the audience as a complete person and also a complete actor. I believe with the kind of roles and films that I have done, I have probably reached 70-80 percent of what I had to. But the rest of crucial 30 percent is very important," said John.
