Salman Rushdie will act in my film: Deepa Mehta

After dabbling with magic realism in her last movie Videsh , Deepa Mehta is now geared up for a bigger challenge - to adapt 'Midnight's Children' which has many ambiguous themes of 'magic realism', extremely difficult, if not impossible, to be portrayed on the visual medium.

But Mehta will work together with Rushdie on the film's screenplay and she has also convinced the author to make his acting debut.


"Salman (Rushdie) is going to act in the film. He has got a role in it, a very interesting one. He plays the palmist, the soothsayer...He is a good actor, so it will be fun," Mehta told PTI in an interview.

Mehta said she read 'Midnight's Children' in the 80s and has wanted to work with Rushdie for a long time.

"I read the book during the 80's when it first came out and I loved it, but I never thought of making a movie on it at that time. I wanted to work with Salman for a long time and once told him 'Let's work together' and that's how it began," Mehta is quoted as saying.

Mehta is not oblivious of the challenge that she faces in adapting one of the best books of our times onto celluloid. But she says she loves taking challenges.

"I love challenges and adapting 'Midnight's Children' is a challenge for me but it is very fascinating at the same time," Mehta said.

Deepa also revealed that she will write the movie with Salman. The duo would begin working in June and would be done by August.

'Midnight's Children' is a fictional work depicting the incidents before and after the independence and the partition of India through the eyes of protagonist Saleem Sinai, who was born on the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947 just as Indian tricolour was replacing British flag. His story encompasses the history of India from Independence until end of emergency in 1977.
