SCOOP!! & NEWS ‘Fusion guru’ Prem Joshua inspired by India08th Jan 2005 21.03 IST By Agencies For Prem Joshua, the journey from Germany to India was not just an adventure trip to the Orient, but one that showed him glimpses of his inner self. No wonder that the jazz-singer-turned-fusion artist, lauded by media and men alike as the ‘Guru of Fusion’, felt he had come “home”. 
Joshua, who hails from a German musical family, says he as a teenage jazz-singer missed “something” in Central European music, which formed the basis of his journey through various countries which, finally wound up in the land of “saints and snakes”. "It was homecoming," Joshua says, although he had dived deep into the music of every region that he had traversed. Only in India, did he find answers to questions for which intense soul searching is the key. Joshua, who was recently here for the launch of his latest album `Yatri', says India and its culture have changed his music from the roots. In the early years of his stay in India, in the late 70s, he took up music lessons from Ustad Usman Khan and interacted closely with masters such as Pandit Ravi Shankar . These associations and his identification with the culture helped him transform his music into a tool to bridge gaps between not just the East and the West but also between minds inebriated with fanatic thoughts. Joshua is as much at ease with the sitar as with the saxophone. Sanskrit and Sufi poems figure in his compositions, which, along with contemporary Western notes, make his music distinctive and unfettered. Also Read Profile Kajol |
