From a small village lad who sang in the local Ramleela to becoming the country's top playback singer lending his voice to Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan , Udit Narayan has indeed come a long way.

As a child, Udit's father wanted him to become a doctor or an engineer rather than singing in a 'Ramleela'.

''What will you do by singing in a Ramleela?' he used to ask me as I, spurred on by my passion for singing, spend my time either singing in the village Ramleela or at a village gathering,'' says the National award winning playback singer reminiscing about his childhood days.

From a small village lad who sang in the local Ramleela to becoming the country's top playback singer, dominating public consciousness through songs like 'Main Yahan Hoon Yahan' in Veer Zaara and 'Ye Tara Woh Tara' in Swades seems like one big "fairy tale story" for Udit.

''It all seems like a dream to me. All I can say is that God has been kind enough to gift me with a good voice since my childhood.

Also, I owe my present position to the tremendous love the millions of people of India have bestowed on me,' the singer told a news agency in an interview in New Delhi.

However, journey of this son of a village farmer, from the precincts of the Ramleela to acquiring a place in the national consciousness has by no means an easy one.

''I have had to struggle a lot to reach the position I am in today,'' Udit said.

''For example, I had to struggle for almost ten years in Mumbai before getting my big break in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak . From 1978, when I got my first break from music director Rajesh Roshan in 'Unnees Bees', till 1988 I did playback singing for a number of films but none of the songs became chartbusters. Then came 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak' whose songs like 'Papa Kehte Hain, 'Akele Hain To Kya Gham Hai' and 'Aye Mere Hamsafar' became huge hits and put me in the big league of singers,' the singer said.

From then on there has been no looking back for the prolific singer.

''From 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak' to Lagaan and Gadar to 'Veer Zaara' and 'Swades', I have received overwhelming love and adulation from the people of India. Having millions of people follow your songs and dancing to their tunes is undoubtedly an 'exhilarating feeling,'' Udit said.
