HOME | SCOOP!! & NEWS | MUSIC Contemporary film music is devoid of soul: Asha Bhosle08th Sept 2005 16.01 IST By Agencies Contemporary film music is devoid of 'soul', said singing diva Asha Bhosle , who turned 73 today. "There is a distinct lack of efforts on the part of the singers, as a result of which the songs being rendered are sans tone and emotions", Asha said at her residence in Mumbai.
"I have been singing in films since 1943 and am reminded of the efforts that earlier singers made in preparing for a song. Today, everything happens so fast...everybody has become a computer", she said. "Earlier, I know of instances where singers like Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar even stopped recording till they got their preparation right", Asha said. "But this does not mean that I am annoyed with today’s singers or music directors. In order to compose a good song, what is needed foremost is good lyrics", she said. Lyricists like Sahir Ludhianvi, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Shakeel Badayuni, Kaifi Azmi, Pradeep, Indivar, Bharat Vyas are missing today, she said. Exceptions are those like Javed Akhtar , who are quite good, she added. Asha launched her singing career with the rendition of a song in a Marathi film, whose music was composed by Datta Dawjekar. “I sang for my first Hindi film in 1947”, she added. Asked if she had curtailed her singing assignments recently, Asha said "nothing like that. I do accept projects where I feel satisfied. For example, I am singing for director Madhur Bhandarkar's next film".
