RATING: 8 Music composer Anu Malik has come up with a pleasantly sensuous and innovative music score for Shahrukh Khan's soon-to-be-released period drama “Asoka, The Great”.
Although the film's songs, written by Gulzar, have many subtle tones that one can easily identify with the style of south Indian music wizard A.R Rahman, Malik's peculiar touch is also palpable in many numbers.
The opening song “San Sanna”, a slow and scintillating number has Alka Yagnik and Hema Sardesai showing their vocal dexterity to the hilt. Besides it has good percussion (particularly the use of Mridang), which Anu has not stifled by keeping only few instruments in the song.
High-pitched Chitra then gives a titillating rendition in “Raat Ka Nasha” which is undoubtedly the best song in the album. It has a raunchy feel that Anu further elevates by the touching leitmotif flute accompaniment and sensuous sound effects in the backdrop.
Then follows the romantic duet “Roshni Se” which has some poetic lyrics (by Gulzar) and is impressively rendered by Abhijit and Alka Yagnik. The song particularly has a gripping bass line and good instrumentation.
Mood changes substantially as we move to album's flip side with “O Re Kanchi”. The song, sung with full gusto by indipopper Shaan and Sunita Rao (who sounds a mite shrill), is a high tempo foot-tapping number with a feel of Indian folk music.
Then comes the second version of raunchy “Raat Ka Nasha” which although not much different from the original number has Abhijit sharing microphone with Chitra. Sandeep Chowta shows his musical genius in the instrumental number “Asoka Theme”.
The only song that passes muster in the album is the closing number “Aa Tayar Ho Ja”. Not only is it poorly composed and vacuously rendered by the petite singer Sunidhi Chauhan, its words are trite and do not gel with the melody line either.
On the whole “Asoka” is a finely composed music score that will go well with the music buffs.
