The Bhoot Unkle Movie Review

Neither spooks, nor entertains

This friendly ghost is going to have a tough time on the box-office.

You can't create a Captain Jack Sparrow out of Jackie Shroff. The handsome actor's get-up as the Bhoot Unkle bears an unapologetic resemblance to Johnny Depp's in the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' series. And Jackie as Bhoot Unkle also happens to be cursed.

'Bhoot Unkle' is a film made for little kids. But there is a bleak chance that it will either entertain or enlighten its target audience. The director has tried to add some spooky chills and kiddie thrills in the movie, but they lack the punch to entertain kids today.

The movie's story revolves around little kid Shyam (Dev Kantawala) who is an orphan. The unfortunate child leads a life full of problems and hardships. The little boy has a bad aunt who tortures him and makes his life hell.

Then, one fine day, Shyam lands in a haunted lighthouse. Therein comes some twist in the story. He finds a missing idol of lord Shiva and there he meets Bhoot Unkle (Jackie Shroff), who is trapped inside the lighthouse from last hundred years and will get �Mukti� only if the idol reaches its right place.

The little one takes the responsibility of taking the idol to its place. But it is not so easy. A corrupt and greedy MLA (Akhilendra Mishra) is also out to get the idol.

'Bhoot Unkle' had the potential to become a thorough entertainer for kids if only the director had given the right execution to the storyline. Still, some scenes in the first half are quite engaging. But the second half is an absolute disaster with poor jokes and low-grade visual effects and cinematography.

The director has used poor animation in the movie, which fails to entertain a child. The whole idea of animation kills the film which is already half dead.

Jackie Shroff as a friendly ghost has neither the required charm nor the conviction for the role. The kid, Dev Kantawala, is the true hero of the movie. He delivers a notable performance. Other actors, Akhilendra Mishra and Rasika Joshi (as the scolding aunt), are passable.

To sum it up, 'Bhoot Unkle' fails to capture the imagination of viewers. The film neither spooks, nor entertains.
