A Feelgood Album - The bunty aur babli Music Review

The music of Bunty Aur Babli goes along well with the non-serious, hilarious theme of the movie. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the trio whose forte is to delectably blend the musical styles of the East and the West in their compositions, come up trumps once again in this bubbly and foot-savvy album.

Bunty Aur Babli is the story of two young dreamers who don many guises to con various people. The film has Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee in the leading roles. Amitabh Bachchan plays an eccentric cop.

Gulzar's lyrics for the film's songs are simple, thought provoking and gel well with the movie's theme.

Dhadak Dhadak has already caught the fancy of many. The song, a full-blown dance number, has a rhythmic appeal that reminds one of the chugging of a train. And no doubt, the song is shot on train and shows Abhishek standing atop a bogie.

Thankfully, Udit Narayan keeps his falsetto tone aside and sings the song in good spirit with Sunidhi Chauhan. The impact of the beats in the background adds the necessary punch to make it an excellent dance number.

However, the most outstanding of all the numbers in the album is the qawwali song Kajra Re in which Alisha Chinai (the self-proclaimed Madonna of Indipop) shows that she knows better than to sing superficially. Alisha brings a subtle sensuousness to her voice and gets good support from Shankar Mahadevan.

In the film, this qawwali will feature Abhishek, Amitabh with Aishwarya Rai, who makes a cameo appearance for this number only.

The album also has a pop-bhangra number Naach Baliye which is sung by Shankar Mahadevan, Somya Raoh and Loy Mendosa. Although the song doesn't sound much Punjabi in spirit (and there is too much of 'come on, come on' in the background), still the three singers create a kind of effervescent thrill that entices you to hit the dance floor.

And then there is a love ballad Chup Chup Ke which has good lyrics but not an equally fine melody. Sonu Nigam and Mahalaxmi Iyer's singing is the only saving grace of this song.

The title track Bunty Aur Babli has a rustic appeal. There is also an English version of the same song, performed by lyricist and singer Blaaze with Shankar and Loy.

All in all, the music of Bunty Aur Babli is breezy, bubbly, funky and carries a flavor of Indian folk also.
