Scarce scares

The scares are scarce. And the ones that are don’t exactly leave you with sweaty palms, electrified hair or shaky bum on the edge of the seat. The scares in Sangeeth Sivan’s horror flick Click at the most tickle you, tingle you and make your heart skip a beat less often than it should have. Reason? The director mostly resorts to all the tried-and-tested formulas in the annals of horror genre to spook the daylights out of the viewers.

For starters there’s a ghost (Sneha Ullal) so ashen, blanched and pale that she looks to have walked out straight from a talcum powder factory. Expectedly she also defies the laws of gravity, walks downside up on the ceilings, wafts in and out of rooms and cupboards, and stays invisible to the human eye but is captured in the photographs of the camera that the fashion photographer hero Avi (Shreyas Talpade) loves to click. Even the tactics she employs to scare the hero, rattling the windows, staring back in the mirrors, blowing out candles etc, aren’t that spooky. And oh! there’s that clichéd sequence of a car accident on a dark night when Avi and his glamourous girlfriend Sonia (Sada) mow down a strange looking girl and do the most obvious thing a couple after an accident on a foggy night would do - run!

However, there are a few moments in the film when the anticipation that the director builds grooves in well with the background score and the camera angles to give you the heebie-jeebies. But such moments are few and far between.

Also director Sangeeth Sivan opens the cards a tad too prematurely. The basic plot of the apparition having a connection with the hero’s debauched past may not be novel but could have been better unravelled. Shreyas Talpade puts in a sincere performance, and Sada does well too. Sneha Ullal, however, remains mostly expressionless even when she isn’t playing the ghost.

A shoddy direction apart, the movie’s tacky special effects and pointless songs just don’t click.
