The Entertainment Movie Review

'Entertainment' is full of slapstick humour
By Nikhil Kumar
Rating: 2.5/5

The ApunKaChoice movie review of Entertainment. Though no animals were harmed during the making of the Akshay Kumar-starrer Entertainment, the humans watching the flick may not be so lucky. This no-brainer screwball comedy touches the summit of silliness that only the likes of Sajid Khan or Anees Bazmi can rival.

The hero of the film whose name appears first in the credits is a charmer with confident gait, silky hair, sparkling teeth and gummy grin. Make no mistake, I’m talking about the dog named Junior. He’s the film’s eponymous hero, who flaunts his cuteness, wags his tail, and has all the menfolk scampering around him like rabid canines.

The world’s turned on its head in Entertainment. Akhil (Akshay Kumar) does odd jobs to make ends meet when one day he learns that he’s the illegitimate son of a billionaire diamond merchant who’s kicked the bucket and left behind all his riches for the taking. Akhil’s euphoria is short-lived. When he lands in the dead dad’s palatial mansion in Bangkok, he’s told by the lawyer Habibullah (Johnny Lever) that the old man’s fave dog named Entertainment (Junior) has inherited all the wealth.

Thereafter, Akhil and his sidekick (Krushna Abhishek) plot to kill the dog to be the next in line to inherit the wealth. Things get further complicated when Karan (Prakash Raj) and Arjun (Sonu Sood), alleging to be two ‘second cousins’ of the dead man, arrive to lay a claim over the wealth.

Writers Sajid-Farhad, who’ve scribbled comedies like Golmaal 2, Housefull 2, Dhamaal 2, Bol Bachchan and others, are known for their penchant for excessive punning. In their directorial debut Entertainment, the duo comes out all guns blazing in wordplay. Krishna Abhishek’s character Jugnu is a film freak who runs a DVD store and can’t say a line without punning on a film actor’s name. Here are a few samples:

- Upon seeing Akshay walking with inflated chest, he says, “Kahan chale Sonakshi Sinha taan ke?

- “Sameera Reddy, steady, Govinda!”

- “Is kuttey ki toh Anupam Kher nahi.”

- When Akshay escapes death, he says, “Prabu Deva ki Mahima Chaudhary dekh Akhil, tu bach gaya.”

- “Iski Shraddha Kapoor ka toone Aarti Chabbria kar diya.”

That’s not it. The Shahrukh-Salman starrer Karan Arjun is parodied no end by the two villains. And there’s Tamannaah playing a starlet under the constant hangover of Balaji tele-serials. Subtlety is damned in one scene when she spouts, “Hamari Ekta humein Shobha nahi deti.” She plays Akshay Kumar’s love interest but daughter of a greedy father (Mithun Chakraborty) who’d marry her only with someone stinking rich, even if that be a dog. Johnny Lever plays a character who blows his lid every time someone mispronounces his name.

It’s a doggone circus of greedy humans wagged around by a dog in Entertainment. The humour is downright pedestrian, slapstick and too loud. Akshay Kumar and Krushna scream out their lines for the most part, as if humour is directly proportional to the decibel assault on our ears. All the performances are over the top. They aren’t intended to be otherwise.

Watch: Akshay Kumar, Tamannaah scorch the dance floor in 'Johnny Johnny'

Director duo Sajid-Farhad pulls out all the stops to make you laugh. They make the hero snarl, grovel and walk on all fours (it’s Akshay Kumar I’m talking about here), they turn the heroine into a simpering damsel and the villains into frothing baboons lusting after her. They inject every inanity to winkle out a laugh from you. And the thing is, despite all its silliness, Sajid-Farhad’s Entertainment may still hit the jackpot at the box office. After all, every man has his day.

Rating: **1/2
