The Girlfriend Movie Review

In the garb of novelty, Karan Razdan has tried to woo the audience by picking up an 'attention-grabbing' subject of lesbianism and sprinkling it with 'eye-popping' skin show by the two saucy belles Isha Koppikar and Amrita Arora.

Indian masses, starved of sex-related subjects on silver screen, will obviously care not a fig to spend a few dimes worth a ticket to quench their curiosity of seeing the two girls 'making it out' before the camera. And they will not be disappointed. The disappointment is in store for those who care for depth in the subject and not merely the skin exposure.

Hardly any attempt has been made to explore the subtleties of a homosexual relation. One girl is shown as too insecure to get into any male relationship, because of an incident of childhood abuse in her life, while the other girl appears to lose her orientation of whom she is getting physical with after swigging down just a few drinks. Therefore, a 'lesbian' relationship.

In itself, any subject can be worth making into a film if the maker knows what he wants to tell and tells it efficaciously. And Karan fails on both the grounds. 'Girlfriend' has neither the spine of a convincing story nor the muscle of believable performances by the star cast.

Of the three main performers in the movie, the one who stands out is Isha Koppikar. At least she is not as superficial in her acting as Amrita and Aashish. There are a few moments in the movie when Isha is able to bring intensity to her character and portray her jealousy and obsession.

Amrita Arora hardly knows a little more than just to giggle or to give a voluptuous expression while Aashish Choudhary looks confused playing a role he could not identify with.

'Girlfriend' might have been made into a gripping film. But it goes by with a thud because of the absence of a moving story. Yet it certainly has the money's worth for those who care for sexually explicit scenes, the steamiest of which comes just before the interval, much to the 'convenience' of such viewers.
