- The Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... Music Review

By ApunKaChoice Bureau
Rating: 3/5

The music score of director Karan Johar's magnum opus, the much-hyped “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham”, is a melange of mushy and meticulously composed melodies.

For the film, Karan has tapped on the musical talents of three different music directors Jatin-Lalit duo, Sandesh Shandiliya and Aadesh Shrivastva.

The title song, composed by Jatin Lalit has the nightingale of Hindi film songs Lata Mangeshkar showing her vocal virtuosity. Even the lyricist Sameer seems to have shunned his usual trite words and penned some moving lyrics. The song's other versions (the sad ones sung by Lata and Sonu Nigam) are equally catchy but a bit saccharine.

Jatin-Lalit seems to have lifted the basic melody line of “Bole Chudian” from an old composition. The song, featuring five singers, is a bland amalgamation of Punjabi folk with Indipop.

Sandesh Shandiliya (of “Piya Basanti” fame) brings whiffs of freshness with a catchy and foot-tapping “You Are My Soniya”, rendered with verve by Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam. The song has good acoustic guitar riffs that catch the listener's fancy instantly.

As a composer, Sandesh impresses once again in the lilting romantic number “Suraj Hua Maddham” which begins with charged orchestration but transposes into gentle rhythm later on. The song also has meaningful lyrics by Anil Pandey (like “Main thehra raha, zameen chalne lagi”).

Sandesh continues the upbeat mood with “Deewana Hai Dekkho” a feel-good number that has some innovative saxophone accompaniment. Kareena Kapoor too chips in a bit with her vocal skills for this song.

While Jatin-Lalit composed “Yeh Ladka Hai Allah” passes unnoticed Aadesh Shrivastava cuts a dash with the impressive closing number a foot-savvy bhangra number “Shava Shava”. The song, besides the host of singers (Alka Yagnik, Sunidhi Chauhan, Udit Narayan and Sudhesh Bhosle) also has Big B's rich baritone.

Rating: Three out of five.
