Mediocre Melodies - The Kyon Ki Music Review

Priyadarshan, the master of comedy films, strays into a different territory with Kyon Ki, a romantic story revolving around a mentally unsound man. Salman Khan plays the male lead, while Kareena Kapoor plays his love interest in the film. The two are paired together for the first time. Rimi Sen also plays an important role.

There is hardly anything refreshing about the music and songs of Kyon Ki. Composer Himmesh Reshammiya, famous for his flair for foot-savvy songs, comes up with a mixed fare full of mushy, sad and lively songs. But only a few manage to make any impact. Lyrics by Samir, as expected, are sometimes plain mediocre and sometimes too lofty.

The title song, Kyon Ki, has a fine melody. It is a love duet sung by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik. But many different versions of this song make it stodgy and overdramatic.

First, there is an adlip version by Alka Yagnik that sounds superficially sad and painful. This sombre version fails to stir much emotion. It may work while seen with visuals in the film.

Then there is a subdued version with Udit-Alka again. This version has some sweetness. And the fourth version has Udit and newcomer Radha.

The album steers into a breezy mood with the lighthearted Dil Keh Raha Hai. The song has Kunal Ganjawala showing his singing talent yet again. Thankfully, he does not overdo his characteristic high-pitched singing style. The album also has a remix version of this song pepped up with more beats.

Dil Ke Badle Sanam is a mediocre composition that attempts to pull a few strings at heart. The song is a romantic duet sung by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik. The song's plain melody and trite words make is a passable track.

Reshammiya then churns out his characteristic footloose melody for Jhatke Maare, a lively, teasing number with a rustic feel. Kailash Kher (who sung 'Mangal Mangal') opens this song and Udit Narayan takes over. The lyrics of this number get real wacky at places with some lines like Goli Maare Tera Dupatta.

Aa Jee Le Ik Pal Mein is full of lofty lyrics by Sanjay Chhel. The melody of this song is lively, but Udit Narayan sounds very pretentious while singing the words that are forcefully philosophical and shallow.

In a nutshell, the music of Kyon Ki is bland, except for the title song and its various versions that may appeal to those who care for soppy stuff. But for a serious appreciator of music, the album is a no go.
