Rocks in parts - The London Dreams Music Review

By Usha Lakra
Rating: 3/5

A story about dreams, Vipul Shah’s London Dreams deals with the life of two friends who want to rock the world with their music. So, we have rock stars in the form of Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan in the movie and connecting these two close friends is the music.

A mega budget movie made on an astronomical amount of approx Rs 120 crores, ‘London Dreams’ has music by fantabulous trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Lyrics are by adman Prasoon Joshi.

So, just like its theme and the budget, does ‘London Dreams’ have really great chartbusters lined up for us?

The first song Barson Yaron marks a sound beginning for the album. With desi feel, this is a rock number with peppy lyrics sung by Roop Kumar Rathod and Vishal Dadlani. One hardly gets to listen Rathod singing in such a manner and traditionalists might find it hard to digest a fast-paced rock version of ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ at the end of the track.

Shankar’s diverse way of rendering a song couldn’t save the track Man Ko Ati Bhavey. It’s a pop number with rustic lyrics. The remix version sounds a bit better because of its peppiness - “Haye Re Haye Re”(from the lyrics.)

Since it’s a Vipul Shah’s film, you can’t separate Punjab from it. Tapkey Masti is a stage number with live feel. If you are not quite a fan of Punjabi music, this track in the vocals of new singer Feroz Shah can give you a headache. The remix version is good for disc consoles because it’s high on energy level.

When this track starts it may sound absurd for your ears as well as your mind, but after one hearing you will like Khanabadosh, which is a very unusual track. Shankar has indeed found a new singer Mohan who sounds very much like him. This remarkable number makes a great title track.

The next number Khwab Jo puts you in a relaxing mood. After four back-to-back hard-hitting numbers, this track by Rahat Fatah Ali Khan and Shankar Mahadevan is semi-classical with a dash of soft rock. A typical Shankar- Ehsaan-Loy number.

A song dedicated to the bond of friendship, Yaari Bina draws inspiration from the music of 70s. Sung by Milind and Roop Kumar Rathod, this number will have a few takers. Another song on the same mode, Jashn Hai Jeet Ka is also a fast track that undoubtedly falls flat.

Energetic track Shola Shola has a very striking start and in-between you get to hear some melodious notes. Zubeen Garg’s perfect intonation makes the song worth listening.

With eight originals and three remixes, ‘London Dreams’ album is very unusual. You will not start liking the songs immediately with its unique desi-yet-rock flavor but the songs grow on you after repeated hearings. Khanabadosh makes for a bankable title number and is a treat for young music lovers who all are basically rock fans.

About other songs, some catch your fancy while the rest simply fail to impress. Don’t look for anything melodious or mellifluous from ‘London Dreams’ and you will like most of the numbers.
