Macbeth meets the Godfather in present-day Bombay. Jahangir Khan, called "Abbaji" as a title of respect, is a powerful and influential Mumbai the Indian name for Bombay-based gangster involved in several criminal activities. Through the cooperation of two prophesying policemen and through them, connections to national politicians, he has never been arrested, and carries on, knowing that money and bribes will assist him throughout his life. Things turn ugly when his mistress, Nimmi, starts to have an affair with one of his men, Maqbool, who has aspirations of succeeding Abbaji one day. Things come to a boil, Maqbool kills Abbaji, and his dreams come true when he takes over as the new underworld leader, without realizing that he, too, has become a target of another faction of Abbaji's men.
Jahangir Khan/Abbaji Pankaj Kapoor is the aging leader of a criminal gang. Nimmi Tabu is his mistress. Members of the gang include Maqbool Irfan Khan, Kaka Piyush Mishra and his son Guddu Ajay Gehi, and 2 cops Pandit and Purohit Puri and Shah respectively. Maqbool and Nimmi love each other, but since Maqbool will not defy Abbaji openly, their affair is kept secret. Nimmi wishes to leave Abbaji and live with Maqbool, but realizes the futility of it while Abbaji is alive. So, she slowly but surely begins to put ideas in Maqbool's head . . .

Vishal Bhardwaj's second directorial attempt Maqbool is the Indianized adaptation of Shakespeare's classic 'Macbeth'.
The movie is set against the backdrop of Mumbai's mafia world. King Duncan of Scotland in 'Macbeth' is replaced by Mafia don Abbaji (Pankaj Kapoor) in this thriller.
Maqbool (Irfaan Khan) is Abbaji's most trusted lieutenant. He is ready to kill or die for his boss whom he reveres like his father. But things change after he develops romantic feelings for Abbaji's beautiful mistress Nimmi (Tabu).
Nimmi too is drawn strongly towards Maqbool. She deftly uses her beauty and charms to entice Maqbool. When the feelings between the two become too hot to hide, Nimmi asks Maqbool to kill Abbaji and take his place in the underworld.
Maqbool is reluctant at first but once he comes to know that Abbaji's mafia kingdom might be inherited by the husband of the old man's daughter Sameera, he decides to act. Moreover, he gets an ultimatum from Nimmi that he should either kill her or Abbaji.
Blinded by greed and his love for Nimmi, Maqbool kills Abbaji to take over his seat in the underworld. But he cannot get rid of the guilt that takes a deep root in his mind and keeps on haunting him. More dead bodies keep piling up and it is only a matter of time before Maqbool's mafia kingdom will come crumbling down.
