Here’s a melody to caress your ears. Vishal Bhardwaj is at his melodious best in the romantic song ‘Khamakha’ from the film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola featuring Imran Khan and Anushka Sharma.
The composer wields the microphone as well to croon Gulzar’s flowery poetry along with singer Prem Dehati. “Jo nahin kiya, karke dekh le, saans rok ke marke dekh le, yeh bewajah, besabab, khamakha nahin, Yeh khamakha nahin,” go Gulzar’s words rendered in Bhardwaj’s lilting voice.
The song captures some beautiful moments between Imran Khan and Anushka Sharma. At the onset itself she’s spotted giving him a smitten look, and then thinking about him while lying sleepless in her four-poster bed. Then we see her stealing a glance at Imran while he plays teen patti with village folks; he catches her eying him, making her all the more conscious of her feelings for him.
What’s really interesting about this composition is how it changes gears with interludes of African music and Haryanvi folk, a fusion only a maverick like Vishal Bhardwaj could have dared.
Also starring Pankaj Kapur and Shabana Azmi besides Imran Khan and Anushka Sharma, Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola will be the first big release of 2013. It will hit theatres on January 11.
