RATING: 8 When filmmaker Anurag Basu last time teamed up with composer Pritam, they came up with incredibly good music score of the movie 'Gangster'. So is the case for Basu's forthcoming movie 'Life In a Metro' also.
The songs of 'Metro' capture various moods and emotions. There are songs about love, life, pain, pathos, despair and hope. And all these numbers are sung by male singers only. And almost all the tracks can be classified in the soft rock category. Guitar (both electric and acoustic) plays a dominant role in most of the songs.
'Metro' is a movie that tells different stories with one common theme: complexities of relationships. The movie stars Shiney Ahuja, Shilpa Shetty, Kay Kay Menon, Kangana Ranaut, Sharman Joshi, Irrfan Khan and Konkona Sen Sharma.
The film's music album begins with 'In Dino' (These Days), a song about search for love. The number is a love ballad beautifully written by Syed Quadri and impressively sung by Soham. The sound of electric guitar adds certain rawness to this lyrically mellow track. This composition by Pritam certainly catches a listener's fancy at the very start of the album.
The remixed version of this song 'In Dino Revisited' has a club feel to it. But it certainly doesn't better the original track.
The next number 'Alvida' begins on a very soft note. The song has some really meaningful lyrics (Amitabh Verma) that highlight the pain and suffering of separation from the loved one. KK lends further emotion and pathos to this number by his brilliant rendering. After a mellow start, the song picks up tempo and pitch before reaching a crescendo.
Singer James infuses a new energy into the reprise version of 'Alvida', which also has different lyrics from the first one. The words and the way James sing them adds more angst and a sense of dejection to this track.
'O Meri Jaan' is a romantic number with an allusion to the fickleness of emotions. Lyricist Sandeep Srivastava's words are quite engaging and singer KK renders this number impressively. KK begins the song on a soft note and brings out emotions of love, joy and hope as the song's rhythm picks up.
The Reprise Version of this song has a more youthful feel.
'Rishtey' is one of the best songs in the album. As the title suggests, the song is about the complexities of relationships. James sings this track with amazing involvement and fervor. Pritam lends a rock feel to this number.
DJs Nikhil Chinappa and Naved make 'Rishtey' foot-savvy in the remixed version of the song.
Pritam goes acoustic with the next number 'Baatein Kuch Ankahee'. This track, with a catchy rhythm played on guitar, catches a listener's fancy instantly. On top of it, singer Sohail captures the right mood and emotion in his vocals.
Adnan Sami adds his own unique touch to the reprise version of 'Baatein Kuch Ankahee', which comes later in the album.
The album veers into the funny mood with 'Kar Salaam' which is written by Syed Quadri. The song is about taking life as it comes and accepting whatever it brings along, be it good or bad. The song is sung by Soham, Sohail and Pritam.
Overall, the music of 'Metro' is in a league of its own. The songs have a soft rock feel and the words in them carry deep meanings. Pritam's melodies are musically rich.
