The mourya Movie Review

A family entertainer with action and emotions
By
Rating: 3/5

Mourya is a robust re-make of the Tamil film 'M. Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi'. Director S. Narayana has served up a family entertainer replete with action scenes and emotional drama.

A Dussehra release, Mourya happens to be Malayalam actress Meera Jasmine's debut film in Kannada. Meera plays an innocent girl Alamelu, who falls in love with a kick-boxing champion.

Another highlight of the film is that hero Puneeth Rajkumar is the son of Kannada super star Rajkumar.

The story revolves round a kick-boxing champion Manu (Puneeth) who is forced by circumstances to stay with his father - a proposition that is not to his liking at all.

But Manu ends up staying with his father (Devraj) because that was the last wish of his mother (Roja), who died of a heart attack. A traumatized Manu, who is deeply attached to his mother, finds it difficult to come to terms with the harsh reality.

The father stays with his second wife and daughter in Shimoga. Manu's girl friend Alamelu (Meera Jasmine) accompanies him. The remainder of the plot deals with Manu's efforts to win over the family and win the kick-boxing championship.

Puneeth, who plays Manu, excels in action scenes. But he is out of depth in the emotional scenes. Unlike his illustrious father, his dialogue delivery leaves much to be desired. Unless he works on this deficiency, Puneeth will be hard put to keep himself afloat, despite the Rajkumar name.

Meera Jasmine's first foray into the Kannada film world is impressive. Jasmine, in contrast to Puneeth scores in the emotional frames.

However, it's Roja as the mother who gives a convincing performance. Devraj who plays the father is a perfect foil to her. Komal Kumar's comedy has a touch of originality to it.

Music by Guru Kiran, however, is a letdown. Another plus point of the film is excellent camera work by P.K.H. Das. The beautiful locales of Shimoga come alive and form the picturesque backdrop of the story.

Verdict: Good
