Ear-Candy - The Neal 'n' Nikki Music Review

When Bob Dylan heard The Beatles the first time, he called their music �bubblegum�. This term comes to mind after hearing the music of Yash Raj Film's forthcoming movie Neal 'N' Nikki. Not that the music in the film is akin to that of the Fab Four. It is just that the film's music is yuppie, bubbly and youthful.

Neal 'N' Nikki is a romantic movie starring Uday Chopra and Tanisha. The film, directed by Arjun Sablok, has been shot in Canada and bears a stark visual resemblance to Yash Raj banner movies like 'Hum Tum' and 'Salaam Namaste'.

After their successful musical score in Kaal, composers Salim-Sulaiman brothers churn out another ear-candy album for Neal 'N' Nikki. Lyrics for the album are written by Anvita Dutt Guptan, Asif Ali Beg and Irshad Kamil.

The album begins on a promising note with the title song that introduces the two characters Neal and Nikki. But a little attentive listening will make you realize that the melody of the song resembles one of the melodies from Kaal soundtrack.

A frolicky track with very casual yet interesting lyrics by Anvita Dutt Guptan, the title song has fine vocal rendition by KK and Shweta Pandit.

The frothy mood is uplifted in the following number, Halla Re, a foot tapping track with elements of rap and qawwali. The song, sung with full gusto by Shweta Pandit, has a delectable fusion of western and Indian style of music. Robert 'Bob' Omulo chips in for the rap bit.

The album then breezes into a gentle mood with 'I'm In Love', a mellow romantic track about a couple's admission of love. The song has been adequately written by Anvita Dutt Guptan. Singers Sonu Nigam and Mahalaxmi Iyer capture well the feeling of being in love. The song also has background chorus singing by Clinton & Dominique Cerejo.

An album nowadays is deemed incomplete without a bhangra track. So in comes the zingy-zangy Punjabi number Akh Ladiye, a not-so-impressive number with a mix of bhangra and pop. Even the best of attempt by the singers - Kunal Ganjawala, Shweta Pandit and Javed Ali - fail to lift this rather poor composition.

Next follows the mushy love song 'I Just Wanna Spend My Life With You'. This English song is a soppy love ballad with the words (by Asif Ali Beg) befitting the expression of a teeny romance. Clinton & Dominique Cerejo's mellow singing makes the song too sugary.

The album concludes with the naughty remix of the title song. This digitally enhanced version - by Sulaiman Merchant, John Stewart and Satya Hinduja - is replete with improvisations.

On the whole, the music of Neal 'N' Nikki is no great shakes. But a few songs will definitely appeal to the youngsters.
