'OMG Oh My God!' is bold and entertaining
By Nikhil Kumar
Rating: 3/5
The ApunKaChoice movie review of OMG Oh My God!. Thank God for atheists for if not for them the devotees might easily lose themselves in the morass of charlatanry that prospers in the name of God. The babas with dopey eyes, the godmen with fiery sermons and pretty sadhvis with silvery voice are out to fill their coffers by duping the gullible, life-battered believers looking for quick-fix solutions to their never-ending problems, and it takes a staunch and unrelenting atheist like the one in Omg Oh My God! to call their bluff. That, the protagonist of the film, superbly played by Paresh Rawal, does with éclat to even merit a Godly nod.
Back in his form, Rawal plays Kanjibhai, a bona fide atheist who runs an antique shop where he buys idols of gods and goddesses for measly sums and sells them at exorbitant price. His profitable business is shaken by an earthquake that reduces only his shop in the locality to rubble. He gets another jolt by the insurance company that refuses to cover the damages because an earthquake is “an act of God”. So the goddamned atheist decides to take on the almighty in the house of law by suing God for damages and pulling into the fray his various godmen, priests, and swamis etc.
And when trouble befalls our resolute atheist Kanji, the one to come to his rescue is none other than Lord Krishna in a dandy avatar (Akshay Kumar).
Director Umesh Shukla adapts the play ‘Krishan Vs Kanhaiya’ to tell this tale of an agnostic taking on the might of the theists and their God by himself fighting a lawsuit in the court. In the process the protagonist strips the God’s ‘collection agents’ of their holier-than-thou mantle with his nuggets of hard-hitting wisdom that makes one pause and think for a moment. Mithun Chakraborty plays a sissy swami, Govind Namdeo a firebrand pundit and Poonam Jhawar a trishul-wielding sadhwi. All charlatans and out to skin their devotees. None of them impress, save for Mithun whom you would like for his effeminate body language.
Akshay Kumar tries to lend a clear-eyed, beatific persona to his character of an incarnated God, the slick, natty, dapperly, bike riding Krishna imparting wisdom to an atheist Kanji and marveling at the ‘business empire’ run by self-appointed gurus and babas.
But it’s Paresh Rawal as the call-spade-a-spade atheist that steals everybody’s thunder with a performance that makes a strictly average movie enjoyable. His portrayal is earnest, steeped with conviction, and not without a generous smattering of humour. Here’s an actor who can evoke a grin from his tirade, without the barb losing its bite. Kudos.
The song ‘Go Govinda’ featuring Sonakshi Sinha and Prabhu Deva is well choreographed though a song or two on Akshay Kumar could have been dispensed with.
All in all, OMG Oh My God! is a brave, bold attempt that might rattle a few nerves with its stereotypical lampooning of gurus and godmen, but it is entertaining and thought-provoking enough to merit a recommendation.
Watch it for Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar and some of the wisecracks the film doles out in the second half.
