It's got vim and vigour - The Om Shanti Om Music Review

RATING: 7
Even as the music score of Shah Rukh Khan's latest movie 'Om Shanti Om' conforms to the popular Bollywood stereotype, the songs in the film's album do have a distinct quality. They are contemporary and yet they have a nostalgic feel to them. And why not? The movie is set in two time periods: the 1970s and the contemporary.

Music director duo Vishal-Shekhar's compositions do not have any pretension of musical grandeur. Some of them are soft and mellow, while others prompt you to hit the dance floor. And complementing the tunes to the T are lyrics by Javed Akhtar. The talented lyricist shows for the first time that he can pen non-poetic, wacky lyrics as well with panache.

The album opens with Aankhon Mein Teri Ajab Si, a lilting number that wins your heart in the very first hearing. The song's melody and its words have a mushy, romantic feel, and Vishal-Shekhar keep the music soft and scintillating to the desired effect. Singer KK captures the song's soulful mood with his impressive singing.

After a mellow start the album changes gears and moves to another level with Dard E Disco, an irresistible dance track with a very catchy melody and unconventional lyrics by Javed Akhtar. The song's music is predominantly western, but there is an unmistakable thump of dholki in the background, adding an extra vigour to this already charged-up number. Sukhwinder Singh moves up and down the musical octave with dexterity and renders the song with full gusto. On screen, this is the song in which SRK flaunts his newly developed six-pack abs.

Then follows an ensemble song Deewangi Deewangi, featuring a host of singers including Shaan, Udit Narayan, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan and Rahul Saxena. It is a feelgood number with a breezy melody that has a retro flavour. In the movie, this song has been picturized on 30 film stars.

Deewangi Deewangi gets further loaded in its 'Rainbow' remix version. But this is strictly for those who trip on remixes.

After this jamboree, the album again veers into a mushy mood with Main Agar Kahoon, a mellow romantic track sung sweetly by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal. The song is a slow-paced track with rich piano accompaniment.

Then follows the heart-rending Jag Soona Soona Lage, a sad and melancholic track with impressive vocals by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who jars your senses and aches your heart with his emotive rendition. Singer Richa Sharma manages to match up to the talented Khan but falls short of capturing the song's emotion with equal finesse. Still, Jag Soona Soona Lage is a fine composition that lingers in your mind even after it is over.

A feeling of nostalgia grips you when you hear Dhoom Tana, a vintage track with a generous use of instruments like daphli, dholki and ghungroos. In between, the song changes gears and switches to rock n' roll mode. Voices of Shreya Ghoshal and Abhijeet are suited to this track. However, an average melody makes this song just a passable number.

Dastaan-e-Om Shanti Om reminds you of the famous song Ek Haseena Thi from Subhash Ghai's movie 'Karz'. The track is based on a similar theme (that of reincarnation) and its lyrics are formatted in the story-telling mode, just like the number by Laxmikant Pyarelal in Ghai's flick in the '80s.

Vishal Shekhar pay emphasis on orchestration in music to create the dramatic mood, and singer Shaan does a commendable job behind the microphone.

The 'Dark Side' remix of this song is just an embellished version of the original.

In a nutshell, the music of 'Om Shanti Om' is a notch above the average, run-of-the-mill scores. And with repeated hearings it only grows up on you.
