Into Mumbai’s underbelly
Seen through the eyes of a police officer, Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai traces the changing face of Mumbai’s underworld and how it all started.
The movie, directed by Milan Luthria, draws upon a lot of real life incidents and characters in the Mumbai of 1970s when the underworld was beginning to take roots in the city’s underbelly.
The leading roles in the film are played by Ajay Devgan, Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut, Prachi Desai and Randeep Hooda. Kangana’s character is reportedly based on late actress Madhubala while Ajay’s character is inspired from the real don Haji Mastan. Emraan Hashmi plays Dawood Ibrahim in younger days.
Here’s the film’s story presented in pictures.
Ajay Devgan as Sultan Mirza
Messiah of the poor, fear of the rich and authority of the powerful, Sultan Mirza was the one whom people turned to when there was nowhere else to look. The silent ruler of the streets of Bombay, he did everything that was wrong according to the law, but right according to him.
Kangana Ranaut as Rehana
Running around the trees and fighting four goons at a time, Rehana is a filmstar who lost her heart to a thief, becoming his strength as well as his weakness. This bold and fearless beauty will bring down anything and everything that stands in the way of her one true love, Sultan.
Emraan Hashmi as Shoaib Khan
The evil prince who fears no one, who loathes everyone and wants to be the only one standing tall amidst the sinister battle for power. Looking down upon the ash at his feet as he rises up like a burning flame, Shoaib is the nightmare that the city hoped would never come alive.
Prachi Desai as Mumtaz
The innocent confidante of a guilty ruffian, Mumtaz is entangled in a web which includes her lover’s desire to make it to the top of the crime ladder and her inability to get out of this tumultuous relationship.
Randeep Hooda as Agnel Wilson
The only man who thought he could save Bombay was ACP Agnel Wilson. On a mission to clean up what he calls the murky filth of the city, has his ambition driven the city to a brink of destruction?
Synopsis
The film, set primarily in the 1970s Mumbai, follows the rise of Sultan (Devgan) and the conflict that crops up when his protégé Shoaib (Hashmi) challenges his supremacy and usurps power to rule the murky underbelly of Mumbai.
The film is presented in a retro chic style and is a glamourous and powerful rewind to a golden era.

Movie Review : Must watch it ONCE (3.5/5) Can’t remember the last time I saw an underworld thriller having so little violence and yet such simmering, understated intensity that it was hard to take the eyes off the screen to admire other things in theatre.
