Do not expect a story in this inane thriller
By Ajay Chaturvedi
Rating: 3/5
Pukar is Madhuri Dixit's first release after her marriage to a US based doctor, Sriram Nene. The film is a romantic thriller with patriotism as the base. A dreaded extremist Abrush (Danny Denzongpa), kidnaps a bumbling Minister Mishraji (Govind Namdeo) and demands 'safe passage'. Major Jaidev (Anil Kapoor) who apprehends Abrush is treated like a hero in his hometown. Anjali (Madhuri), who is Jaidev's childhood friend, loves him madly. She uses Court martial kar doongi whenever she wants to threaten somebody but, innocently. Jai, however, falls in love with Pooja (Namrata Shirodkar), daughter of a Colonel. Jai and Pooja have a torrid affair and the two decide to wed. This makes Anjali angry. She gets desperate and connives with Mishra's secretary Tiwari (Anjan Shrivastav) and Col. Rana (Shivaji Satam) to plot Abrush's escape to teach Jai a lesson. Hero Jai is blamed for the escape of Ambrush and is termed a traitor. He gets isolated and finally court-martialled for his “crime”. Even wife Pooja ditches him, as her parents will have nothing to do with a "traitor". A repentant Anjali is unable to speak out the truth. Jai learns the truth and the identity of those behind the conspiracy. As it happens in Hindi films, our hero tries to save the people, single-handedly in true Bollywood style. The first half of the film is good and makes some sense but in the second half the director loses track and we have the same Bollywood style maardhaad to end the film. Madhuri and Prabhudeva's foot tapping number Que Sera Sera is a treat for Madhuri-fans. Anil Kapoor is good as the Major and handles his romantic role with equal ease. Danny as Abrush gets carried away and tends to overact. The film has a rare screen appearance by Lata Mangeshkar. A R Rahman's fusion music is perfect for the mood of the movie. | |

| Music Review : Good but same old tunes (3/5) Pukar is A R Rahman's latest Hindi soundtrack. Like most of his work, this album also has fusion music, which does not sound new. Still, he manages to give some hummable numbers. Rahman has managed to get best out of Sonu Nigam, Anuradha Paudwal and the goddess of Hindi film industry Lata M...
