Strictly Okay - The Shakalaka Boom Boom Music Review

RATING: 4
It is a film with which filmmaker Suneel Darshan hopes to change his style. Moving away from mushy, romantic dramas that he used to make, in 'Shakalaka Boom Boom' Darshan is trying a theme that hopes to catch the fancy of today's youth. The film is based on rivalry between two singers and performers. Bobby Deol and Upen Patel play the respective roles. Kangana Ranaut and Celina Jaitley play their love interests.

Now when a film happens to be a musical, a great onus lies on the composer of its songs. Himesh Reshammiya composes songs that seem to go well with the theme and mood of 'Shakalaka Boom Boom'. However, with the exception of the title song and 2-3 other songs, there is hardly anything catchy in the music album of 'Shakalaka Boom Boom'.

The unusual thing about this music album is that it has five songs that don't last more than 2 minutes each. Perhaps these short tracks will be used in singing competition sequences in the film.

The most outstanding song of the album is the title song 'Shakalaka Boom Boom', in which Reshammiya once again shows his knack to compose catchy, addictive melodies. The song has a strong influence of rap and pop. It is a peppy, snazzy track impressively sung by Himesh. Although Akriti Kakkar gives good company to Reshammiya on the microphone, she falls short of matching his uninhibited spirit.

The remixed version of this track carries an extra punch and makes for a decent foot-tapping number.

'Thaare Vaaste' is no great shakes but it does make for a feelgood, easy-on-the-ears song with slightly romantic lyrics from Sameer. Singers Shaan and Sunidhi Chauhan sound good together in this track. However, the remixed version of the song appears like a mere space filler, and that too a bad one.

After going ballistic in the title track, Reshammiya holds his horses and slows down for 'Naamumkin', a sorrowful track sung from the perspective of a jilted lover. With his characteristic nasal voice, Reshammiya effectively conveys the pathos of Sameer's words in this song. The remix version of this number is not better than the original.

'Dil Lagaayenge' is the most forgettable track in the album. Its melody is bland, lyrics are banal and singing (by Himesh and Akriti) is plain mediocre.

Then follow a string of short songs each lasting from a little more than a minute to two minutes. 'Isi Umeed Pe' brims with hope and expectation conveyed by Sameer's lyrics. However, the two-minute long song's melody is a little above average. So is Shaan's singing, too.

90-seconds long 'Aaj Nahi Toh Kal' (sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Shaan) sounds familiar in melody.

2-minute long 'Saathiya' is slightly better in composition and music arrangement. Even singing by Kunal Ganjawala and Sunidhi Chauhan is pretty good.

'Tera Sona Sona Roop' has a catchy rhythm and melody. Kunal Ganjawala spiritedly sings this track and Sunidhi Chauhan gives him good company.

The same goes for 'Rukhsat' which is just over a minute long. But even in this short duration Himesh and Shaan leave quite an impression with their singing.

The 'Melody Mix' has all the short songs in succession. Interestingly, these compositions sound much better when heard one after another rather than in isolation.

On the whole, 'Shakalaka Boom Boom' has few good compositions. The title song, 'Naamumkin' 'Tera Sona Sona Roop' and 'Rukhsat' are the numbers that make an impression. The rest are strictly okay.
