Unconventional - The Taxi No. 9211 Music Review

After reaching an all-time low with songs and melodies that fitted only selected situations (hero-heroine dancing around the trees or sex bombs shaking to item numbers), the music in Hindi films is on the rise again.

And of late there has also been embracing of the western influences of hip-hop, rhythm and blues and rap in Hindi film music. The music of 'Bluffmaster' was anything but conventional. Now the makers of the movie, Ramesh Sippy productions, come up with 'Taxi Number 9211', which has been directed by Milan Luthria, a filmmaker whom success has unfortunately eluded so far.

Starring John Abraham, Nana Patekar, Sameera Reddy and Sonali Kulkarni in the lead roles, 'Taxi Number 9211' tells the story of two very different individuals who get stuck together by a twist of fate. Both are in a rush and have deadlines to meet.

The music of the film is given by Vishal-Shekhar duo whose musical flair and penchant for the unconventional saw the making of 'Bluffmaster' music. The lyrics of the songs are written by Vishal and Dev Kohli.

Boombai Nagaria - Living in the City is an ode to Mumbai city. Catchy in melody and beautifully sung by Bappi Lahiri, the song also features derisive verbal exchanges between John Abraham and Nana Patekar. Composer and lyricist Vishal Dadlani also joins Bappida after a while in this song with strong Mumbai flavour. Female singers Merriene and Nisha's renditions mainly remain in the backdrop.

The song's club mix version by Guru Sharma has high tempo and more beats.

Ek Nazar Mein Bhi is a soft and soothing number about falling in love at first sight. The song, sung by KK and Sunidhi Chauhan, has a very lilting melody and excellent use of instruments by Vishal Shekhar. Particularly addictive to the ears is the whistle-like melody that follows after every verse.

If 'Bluffmaster' had 'Right Here Right Now', 'Taxi No 9211' has 'Meter Down' as its promotional number. This unconventional, foot-tapping song has been impressively sung by Adnan Sami. Vishal has written the song's lyrics. The video of this song features John and Nana with a bevy of foreign beauties. The album also features a peppier rock 'n' roll version of this song.

Shekhar of the composer duo sings the song Aazmale Aazmale, lyrics for which has been written by Dev Kohli. Although the song has notable singing by Shekhar, its insipid melody makes it a forgettable number.

Haunting guitar notes mark the beginning of Bekhudi, a melodious, soft rock number sung by Shaan. One strong point of this number is its poetic lyrics by Dev Kohli.

Kunal Ganjawala tries to infuse vigour into Udne Do, a song about human ambition. The song has rhythmic beat with singer Harshdeep chipping in the edgeways.

On the whole, the music of 'Taxi Number 9211' may be no great shakes, but a few good numbers in the album does strike a chord or two among the listeners.
