'The King of Bollywood' is a satirical take on an ageing superstar in Bollywood, who, although well past the prime of his heydays, still believes that he carries the charisma to play hero to the young actresses in films. In a way, the film also takes a comical look at the way films are sometimes made in Bollywood.
At the center of the story is 51-year-'young' Karan Kumar a.k.a. KK (Om Puri), who used to be the most sought-after star in Bollywood in the prime of his life. He was also given the title 'The King of the Bollywood'.
Although so many years have passed since that time, KK still clings to the notion that none in the industry can match him before the camera. Despite his age, he has no inhibitions to wear gaudy clothes and not the slightest hesitation to romance young things in films.
Crystal Chaurasia (Sophie Dahl) is a 24-year-old, gorgeous NRI documentary filmmaker of partly Indian origin. She came to know about KK when she was just a child when her grandma used to show her the videos from KK's films at bedtime. Crystal comes to Mumbai from UK to make a documentary on the life and times of KK. In this venture she is backed by The International Film Commission.
On the other hand, KK plans his son to take up a career in films and carry forward the legacy created by him. But his son, Rahul, has no inclination to act in movies.
When KK comes to know that Crystal has come to India to make a documentary on him, his delusional self comes to fore in full splendor. What follows is a series of very comical acts by the ageing star.
