An Enjoyable Entertainer

Rating: 0.5/5
The Silambarasan-directed 'Vallavan' lives up to its pre-release hype and hoopla. It bears the unmistakable signs of a hit.
Having said that it must be mentioned that debut director Silambarasan has done a better job than Silambarasan the writer.
The first half of the film is racy, peppered with songs, romance and masala designed to woo the youthful audience.
If only Silambarasan had kept the momentum in the second half as well! But the tempo slackens. The director seems to have run out of ideas as to the denouement.
Vallavan (meaning Ustad) is supposed to be a treatise on obsessive love, romance and friendship. Nothing wrong with the conception as such. It is the execution that suffers - that too in the latter part of the glossily packaged film.
Of course, the flick revolves around Silambarasan who plays the protagonist Vallan, a college student. He has a roaring time in college in the company of his friends and Suchi (Sandhya), his conscience keeper.
The turning point is his meeting with Swapna (Nayantara) who is teacher. But love blossoms despite the age difference. Vallan decides to woo her by turning into Pallan (Simbu) an ugly duckling with buck tooth, etc.
But hell breaks loose when Swapna comes to know that Vallan is younger than her and a student to boot. She rejects Vallan who had managed to bed her in the meantime, and decides to marry another person.
As it so happens, Vallan has a past too. His first flame of the school days, Geeta (Reema Sen) is madly in love with him. The girl turns a psychic case and is bent upon settling scores with Vallan. In a determined bid to win his affection, Geeta abducts Suchi. What happens in the climax? It is better left unsaid, if only to keep the suspense.
Silambarasan's characterization has also gone awry, especially in the case of Reema Sen. As a result, Reema's Geeta looks hardly convincing.
But telling performances by Nayantara and Silambarasan save the film. Nayantara looks fetching and succeeds in emoting too. Of course, there is a regulation kissing scene as well for the benefit of the youthful audience.
Yuvan's music is a major plus point of the film. “Loose Penne” and “Vallava” are the pick of the lot. Priyan handles an excellent camera and Rajeevan's artwork is commendable. Editor Antony could have done a better job because the film is too lengthy, 3 hours and 5 minutes.
'Vallavan' is an enjoyable entertainer despite the minus points.
