The vettam Movie Review

RATING: 6

Are you feeling down in the dumps? Want to lighten up? If the answer is yes, watching ace director Priyadarshan's Vettam (Light) will do the trick.

It is slapstick of a good order. Of course, it is not one of Priyan's best fun films like Kakkakkuyil and Chitram. But your mood will certainly lift on watching it. A chase-the-blues-away kind, you might call it.

Vettam can also be said to have shades of Bollywood blockbluster "Pyaar To Hona Hi Thaa" and the Hollywood flick "French Kiss".

The film proves that when it comes to comedy, few can excel Priyadarshan. The grim-looking director believes in providing wholesome entertainment. His motto seems to be: laughter is the best antidote to gloom.

The story is not much to write home about. A thief, Gopi, (Dileep) is on the get-away trail after stealing a priceless chain. Hot on his trail is a police officer (Radha Ravi). Gopi runs into Veena (Bhavana) in the course of his 'great escape'. The girl, Veena, is out on a mission: to break the marriage of her lover to a tycoon's daughter. The duo decide to tough it out together.

Gopi manages to hide the chain in Veena's bag, only to find later, to his dismay, that it has done the vanishing trick. A love-hate relationship follows and the two become good friends. Now Gopi has a mission too: to make it big in life with the help of the chain. But then that was not to be. The best-laid plans of men and mice go awry. And Gopi's game plan fails to fructify.

As usual, Priyadarshan has succeeded in maintaining the tempo. The frames are lively and packed with fun. Thanks to slick editing, the film's first half is particularly entertaining.

The plot thickens in the second half as more characters enter the scene. What follows is a collage of hilarious scenes. And when these characters are essayed by seasoned veterans like Jagathy Sreekumar, Cochin Haneefa, Janardhanan, Innocent, Jagadhish, Mamukoya and Bindu Panickar, it is comedy at its hilarious best.

Comedy is Dileep's forte. Vettam again proves that the chubby-faced actor is second to none in enriching comedy. The dialogue delivery is superb and the sense of timing, as always, immaculate. He reminds you of vintage Mohanlal in some scenes. The surprise of the film, however, is newcomer Bhavana. It is an impressive debut for the comely girl, who has the potential to develop into a fine actress.

The Music by Benny Ignatious is nothing original. But still the songs are suffused with melody and suit the mood of the film. Some of them are of course rehashes of old melodies. But the numbers make you feel good.

Worth a watch if you are feeling low and dispirited.
