RATING: 6 Right from Ranbir Kapoor’s appearance to the look of the movie, ‘Wake Up Sid’ exudes freshness. On top of it, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the splendid trio that has churned spunky, soothing melodies in the past, does it again in ‘WUS’. The contemporary yet poetic lyrics are by Javed Akhtar.
With new director, Ayan Mukherjee, producer Karan Johar also deviates from his usual larger-than-life films in ‘WUS’. Lavish sets have been replaced by a small flat in Mumbai’s urban setting and you get to see a funny, lazy and laidback teenager. The album is a sweet-small package of six cheery songs. Here we go, waking up with Sid!
Wake Up Sid The melodious journey starts with Wake Up Sid - the title track in a usual Shankar Mahadevan style. The soft rock number does leave a mark but it sounds like any other Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy song. Nevertheless, the track oozes energy and introduces Sid, the happy-go-lucky guy.
Kya Karoon? The song’s tune is a hummable one and the vocals of Clinton Cerajo are just right for this number. The vigour and enthusiasm about life is well expressed and don’t miss that catchy riff at the beginning of the track.
Aaj Kal Zindagi The usual Shankar Mahadevan song about following your heart and chasing dreams, Aaj Kal Zindagi is a nice track. The song impresses you with sanguine lyrics and Shankar’s soulful rendition.
Iktara The fusion number, Iktara is a very different track in the voice of Kavita Seth and Amitabh Bhattacharya. With a slight touch of pop as well as classical music, it’s a track you can listen to time and again.
Life Is Crazy The peppy mood continues with this pro-life song crooned by Shankar and well supported by Uday Benegal. The song sounds no different in terms of music with the use of same instruments like guitar. Here the album gets a bit monotonous.
Wake Up Sid (club Mix) The catchy rhythm of the title track gains tempo in this rehash. The only difference is that the song starts with the ticking sound of a clock; indeed a good remix.
Like the theme of the movie, the album’s songs are about life and new beginnings. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have kept the mood jolly with each song of the album, but the trio hasn’t tried to do anything different; they have walked the beaten path. More was expected of them.
Anyway, the music score offers you soft rock and light pop music, and sets your mood for some fun, frolic and merry making.
