Film fest aims at going truly global

Having moved permanently to the idyllic beach resort of Goa last year, the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) this year aims at going truly global, including entries from African and Latin American countries in its competition section that was earlier restricted to Asian cinema only.

The ten-day film fest, that opens with the Brazilian film 'Olga' directed by Jayme Monjardim on November 24, will also have as a 'mid-fest gala' the world premiere of Prakash Jha 's Hindi film Apaharan that stars Ajay Devgan , Nana Patekar and Bipasha Basu .

In all, 16 films from 13 countries, including the Indian entries -- recently released Bollywood movie Iqbal , directed by Nagesh Kukunoor , and Kamal's Malayalam film 'Perumazhakkalam', are there in the competition section.

The jury for the competition is headed by famous Chilean director Miguel Littin and has Austrian film director Sabine Derflinger, Indian filmmaker Saeed Akhtar Mirza, Iranian actor Faramarz Gharibian and French director Alain Corneau.

"In all, there will be 300 screenings of about 200 films, of which a total of 112 are foreign films from 31 countries," said Afzal Amanullah, Director, Film Festivals.

The 'Cinema of the World Section' includes retrospectives of German cinema, famous actress and director Lena Wertmuller and French actress Isabelle Huppert as well as seven recent films made in Iran.

The Indian Panorama section includes 21 feature films, 12 of which are mainstream cinema and 16 non-feature films.

As star attractions of the film festival, both Indian and foreign films will be premiered, including 'Apaharan', which will be screened on December 1.
