SCOOP!! & NEWS Halle Berry to play Indian Brockovich24th Nov 2004 15.15 IST By ApunKaChoice Bureau Academy Award winner Halle Berry is likely to play the role of an India-born law graduate in America, Vanita Gupta, whose campaign helped overturning the judicial ruling in one of the biggest drug bust cases in the US. Vanita Gupta is like the Erin Brockovich for the colored people in the Texas town of Tulia where 10 percent of its African-American population was arrested in a drug bust case in 1999, based on the sole testimony of under-cover narcotics agent Thomas Coleman. 
In 2001, Gupta got involved in the case as the legal counsel for the Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF) for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and orchestrated a complex campaign that led the then Texas Governor and the Texas Board of Pardons to grant pardon to all those convicted in the case. According to a report in the Daily Variety, film producers Mike Tollin and Brian Robbins are making a movie on the Tulia episode. The movie will be titled 'Tulia' and will be scripted by Karen Croner, who wrote 'One True Thing'. Halle Berry, who won the Oscars for her role in 'Monster's Ball', is reportedly being considered to play the role of Gupta in the film. |
