Aamir Khan ’s latest movie Mangal Pandey – The Rising is off to an impressive start abroad. In the U.S. alone, the movie has crossed the half-million mark during the weekend.

Despite mixed audience response back home and despite criticism from some British figures, Ketan Mehta ’s movie The Rising is raking it in at the box-office abroad.

The movie opened last Friday on the US charts at 21st position, much higher than other releases like ‘Grizzly Man’ and ‘Pretty Persuasion’.

In its three days’ run at 63 theatres in the US, ‘The Rising’ grossed a huge sum of $531,018, which is considerably higher than the opening weekend earnings of Aamir’s previous movies Dil Chahta Hai and Lagaan .

In fact, the per screen average of ‘The Rising’ in the US is higher than that of new big Hollywood releases ‘Four Brothers’ and ‘The Skeleton Key’.

In the U.K., ‘The Rising’ opened at 10th position and grossed £220,259 in its three days’ run at 73 theatres. The film has proved to be the biggest opener for Bollywood this year in the UK.

‘The Rising’ tells the tale of the first Indian rebellion against the colonial British in 1857 when an Indian sepoy named Mangal Pandey sparked a revolution after defying to use animal fat-laced cartridges. The movie, the most expensive in Bollywood history, has Toby Stephens playing the British officer William Gordon.

Bollywood actresses Rani Mukherjee and Amisha Patel play marginal roles in the film.
