'Provoked' to be dubbed in three Indian languages

Keeping in mind the universal subject of Aishwarya Rai ’s latest starrer Provoked , its producers have decided to take the movie to wider audiences.

The film, originally made in English language, will hit the Indian theatres in three more dubbed versions – in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

The film is based on a true story of a Punjabi-Briton named Kiranjit Ahluwalia (played by Aishwarya Rai), who was a victim of domestic violence and marital abuse for ten years. She was sentenced to life imprisonment in the UK after she killed her husband. While Kiranjit was behind bars serving her sentence, a group of social workers called the Southhall Black Sisters organized rallies and protests following which the British judicial system reprieved Kiranjit’s punishment.

One of the movie’s producers, J Murli Manohar, told IANS about the decision to dub the film in Indian languages: “Since the theme of domestic violence is as relevant in the West as in a remote village of Punjab or Bihar or Tamil Nadu, we'd like 'Provoked' to go into places that are ideally not seen as commercially viable for English language films. We therefore plan to dub 'Provoked' into Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.”

The movie is directed by Jagmohan Mundhra .

Besides Ash, the film stars Nandita Das , Miranda Richardson and Naveen Andrews .

The film was recently shown at the Cannes Film Festival (in market section) where it was lauded for its compelling depiction of a woman suffering domestic violence.

The three Indian versions of ‘Provoked’ will also have added background music by A R Rahman .

The film is likely to release in August.
