Those who have seen the film at its two premieres – first at Cannes and recently at IIFA in Dubai – seem pretty impressed with Ash’s portrayal of a battered wife in the film. Some have even said that Ash has played her part “to perfection”. 
But in Aishwarya’s words, the best compliment has come from none other than the woman she plays in the film. In the film, Ash plays a real life character of Kiranjit Ahluwalia, a Punjabi woman married to an Indian in the UK. Kiranjit was a victim of domestic violence and suffered torture at the hands of her husband for ten years before killing him. The courts in Britain first sentenced her to life imprisonment, but later reprieved the punishment. Ash says it was a “moving experience” for her to watch the movie alongside Kiranjit at Cannes. And after the movie was over, Kiranjit turned to Ash and said something that touched the actress deeply. A media report quotes Ash as saying: “After she (Kiranjit) watched it (the film), she turned to me and said, “That was me”. For me that was the biggest compliment.” ‘Provoked’ is directed by Jagmohan Mundhra . Apart from Ash, the movie stars Naveen Andrews , Miranda Richardson and Nandita Das .
