HOME | SCOOP!! & NEWS | BOLLYWOOD Pyaar Ke Side Effects : Movie Review15th Sept 2006 22.20 IST By Neha Kewal It is easy to fall in love. But when one has to handle the excess baggage that comes along with making a lifelong commitment, that is when Love Crashes. Pyar Ke Side Effects is a funny, frivolous romantic comedy that explains ‘relationships of today’. Casting Rahul Bose and Bollywood’s sex kitten Mallika Sherawat in her toned down avatar, director Saket Chaudhary has chosen the path of humour to narrate his story in his very first outing. And rightly so.
‘Pyaar Ke Side Effects’ is the story of Sid (Rahul Bose), a middle-aged DJ, full of energy and life. He loves Trisha (Mallika Sherawat), a simple girl who runs away from home on her wedding day. After 3 years of their relationship, Trisha bends down on her knees and proposes Sid for marriage. Here begins Sid’s confusion. Sid loves Trisha and wants to be with her, but the very thought of commitment sends shivers through his spine. Whereas Trisha wants commitment, marriage, family, home and everything else that comes along with a marital life. Sid, in a confused state, asks his sister Shalini (Taraana Raja) for help. In spite of the constant red alert of his funny and insane roommate Nannu (Ranvir Sheorey), Sid, one fine day in the same state of confusion, lands up in Trisha’s office and gets ready for marriage. The commitment finally turns out to be Sid’s nightmare and he has to do everything that he hated – searching a perfect engagement ring, shopping for marriage and the worst that could happen was meeting Trisha’s family. Trisha’s father Retd General Mallik (Sharad Saxena), a strict man with rules, wants Sid out of his daughter’s life and wants her to marry her ex-fiancé Vivek Chadda (Jas Arora). The movie explains some major problems faced in relationships but choosing a lighter way to narrate the story is the best part. The film progresses with constant pace, bringing forth in a funny way some hard facts about life and relationships. The story takes a turn near the intermission when a misunderstanding leads to Sid and Trisha’s break off. To make things work again Sid lands at Trisha’s birthday party where he finds her ex-fiancé throwing a party for her. Heart-broken Sid then meets a hot babe Baby Doll Vol. 3 Tanya (Sophie Chaudhary) and tries to get along with her to forget Trisha. But he fails. Meanwhile, Trisha decides to marry her ex-fiancé. As the story heads towards climax, Sid realizes that he is actually ready commit to Trisha and wants to marry her. But isn’t it too late as she has already decided to get married to Vivek? To find the answer you have to watch this season’s craziest love story. The music of the movie is just fine. Although songs do not really get along with the story, the remix “Bad Boy” and a Punjabi song “Pyar Karke” are some good foot tapping numbers. Saket Chaudhary has given his best and has made a fairly enjoyable movie, considering it is his directorial debut. The way he has narrated the story with witty oneliners and tongue-in-cheek humour, is appreciable. Mallika’s new avatar suits her. She is looking good as a simple girl and her acting is also natural. Rahul Bose once again has proves his worth as a brilliant actor. Ranvir Sheorey is awesome. He deserves a huge applause for his brilliant acting and he looks fantabulous in a funny role. Sophie looks sexy in the movie and fills the void created by the director making Mallika simple. Others have also acted well. On the whole, ‘Pyaar Ke Side Effects’ is not infectious. But it does promise 2:20 hrs of enjoyment and fun.
