David DhawanNeed of the hour – A Slapstick Comedy
19th July 2007  22.55 IST
By N. K. Deoshi

It has been quite some time since movie buffs were treated to the David Dhawan brand of humour.

David Dhawan is the undisputed king of slapstick comedy. He is the man who is adept in giving a humorous twist to even the most ludicrous of plots. His comedy does not rely so heavily on wit as it does on slapstick and kitsch. He could take a nonsensical story and sprinkle it with his own brand of crass humour that will make your belly churn with laughter.

Almost all of Dhawan’s comedies rely heavily on performances by actors. Dhawan candidly admits that Govinda remains on the top of his list of favourites. On the second place there is a tie between Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt .

Nearly two years after his last inconsequential comedy Shaadi No. 1 , Dhawan now returns with Partner (check out the slideshow), a comedy featuring two of his favourites – Govinda and Salman.

The film, loosely inspired from Hollywood film ‘Hitch’, tells the story of a love guru and his student. Salman plays the love guru who doles out tips to woo women to Govinda, who plays a nerd in love with a beautiful socialite (played by Katrina Kaif ). Salman in turn falls for a journalist ( Lara Dutta ) who wants to expose the myth of the love guru. As Salman and Govinda use well-crafted lies and deceit to woo the two girls, they find themselves in a romantic mess. How will the two resolve this tangle forms the crux of the story?

David Dhawan does not deny that ‘Partner’ is inspired from ‘Hitch’ but he insists that the comedy in his movie is not directly derived from the Hollywood flick.

Salman Khan, after the premiere of ‘Partner’ early this week, said that the movie would provide paisa vasool entertainment to the audience. When asked to describe the film in few words, Salman said: “comedy, comedy, and some more comedy.”

Well, a laugh-riot is exactly the need of the hour for movie buffs who have not yet seen one good comedy film coming from Bollywood this year. Govinda was too restrained in Bhagam Bhaag and Amitabh Bachchan’s Cheeni Kum was sarcastic in tone. These films made you smile, but they never had you in splits.

‘Partner’, which releases on Friday, promises just that.
