The Aakrosh Movie Review

Watch it for performances
By Naresh Kumar Deoshi
Rating: 2.5/5

Aakrosh movie review by ApunKaChoice. The film stars Ajay Devgan, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Paresh Rawal, Amita Pathak and Milind Gunaji.

The more things change the more they remain the same. Just as the malaise of honour, rather ‘horror’, killings continue to haunt the modern, ‘incredible’ India, likewise the old habit of filching stuff from Hollywood remains rooted in the new age Bollywood. Not surprising that the two films releasing this Friday derive ‘inspiration’ from Hollywood.

Aakrosh takes the basic plot of the 1988 Hollywood movie Mississippi Burning and gives it an Indian spin with a story about honour killings in a society divided by the fault-lines of caste.

Pratap (Ajay Devgan) and Siddhant (Akshaye) are two FBI...err...CBI officers investigating a case of unexplained disappearance of three young medical students in a village called Jhanjhar in the heart of rural India.

The three were killed because one of them, from a lower caste, dared to love and elope with a girl from the higher caste.

As the two officers investigate, they are faced with uncooperative locals who wouldn’t let out the truth for fear of being slain by the radical Shool Sena. Even the police, headed by the irrevocably corrupt and lecherous cop (Paresh Rawal) are hand in glove with the local politicos and goons from high caste.

So what ought to have been an open-and-shut case with the guilty promptly consigned to the gallows, turns out to be a spark to the tinderbox of the caste-divided Jhanjhar.

Priyadarshan, known for making comedies, wades into the muddy waters of the so-called realistic cinema once again after his previous similar attempts like Viraasat, Kaala Paani and the acclaimed Kanjeevaram. But Aakrosh teeters somewhere between the art-house and the masala mainstream. While the depiction of brutality done in the name of caste is gory to the gut, the sudden slide into a romantic track between Devgan and the battered Bipasha Basu, or the Bharadwaj-inspired escapade into a raunchy item song “Issak Sa Meetha” that has Sameera Reddy heaving her bosom, isn’t exactly music to the ears.

Yet, credit must be given to the actors for making Aakrosh work. Akshaye Khanna, as the disciplined CBI officer relies more on persuasion and interrogation to crack the case. But Devgan adopts more aggressive ways and literally grabs his opponents by the balls, dodges bullets, chases the goons, rides atop a speeding car, jumps from rooftops and outmuscle the sword wielding Shool Sena with grit and a chaadar-full of red hot chilli peppers. The other actor who stands out is Paresh Rawal, who plays a scumbag with utter conviction.

Apart from its topicality and performances, Aakrosh is at best an average film. Watch it if you are in the mood for serious and dark cinema.

Rating: 2.5 stars out of 5
