The Game Movie Review

A Lame Game
By Naresh Deoshi
Rating: 2/5

The ApunKaChoice movie review of Game. When it comes to punning on movie titles, I’m not usually game but this time I have already made an exception. For director Abhinay Deo’s film Game, despite attempting earnestly to be different, edgy, and glossy, turns out to be just another run-of-the-Bollywood-mill whodunit with the finger of suspicion swivelling from one character to another until folks are bumped off or slash their wrists one after another leaving you with a blank that’s filled with the obviously expected twist in the tale.

And in the midst of this plot convolution you have to bear with an exceptionally hammy Kangana Ranaut in her elevator heels, swish suits, and a garbled diction to boot. Playing a detective investigating the murder of a business tycoon, she tries too hard to be smart, confident, in control of things, even though her accent keeps going haywire, making you wanna pause and rewind to make sure you heard right what she said. In one scene, when a suspect under surveillance by her sleuths manages to slip away, she squeaks to her boss: “He’s slipped sir valence.” See, that’s what I’m talking about.

The story by Althea Delmas Kaushal keeps flitting across countries and continents. In Istanbul, Neil (Abhishek Bachchan) runs a casino, deals in drugs (allegedly), and bumps off his Columbian creditors single-handedly. In Thailand, O P Ramsay (Boman Irani) is running for Prime Ministerial elections but is dogged by controversies thanks to his loose temper and dull head. In Mumbai, Bollywood star Vikram Kapoor (Jimmy Shergill) has a dead body to dispose of, and a career to save. And in London, crime reporter Tisha Khanna (Shahana Goswami) is drunk and depressed for reason never made clear.

So these four characters get an invitation to the Greek island of Samos, the whole of which, we’re told, is owned by the India-born multi-billionaire Kabir Malhotra (Anupam Kher) who lives in the palatial house with just an assistant executive (Gauhar Khan), a bunch of orderlies, and two graves.

As the four arrive on the secluded island, Kabir Malhotra unravels his game. Apparently he has a score to settle with each one of the quartet. The common connection between the four is a mystery girl (Sarah Jane Dias) who now rests in peace underneath one of the above mentioned graves. The first twist comes with a murder which is made to look like a suicide. Enters the aforementioned irritating detective, who vows to nail the killer.

Any good suspense thriller is characterized by an intelligent but not implausible plot, unexpected twists, and clever placement of red-herrings so that when the dots are finally connected and the pieces of the puzzle fall into place in the end, a viewer has that OMG! goose-bumpy expression rather than the peeved look that Game manages to evoke. Reason? The trail of the killer keeps getting thinner because some suspects die or are simply not suspects anymore. Moreover, the inclusion of a surprise back story in the dying hours of the plot -- apparently to justify the motive behind the murder -- and the introduction of new characters is the lamest trick in detective fiction. Game is not void of it.

Performances are plain mediocre. Abhishek just about manages to pass off as a debonair city slicker with a remarkable stamina to jog and an allergy to gunpowder. Jimmy Shergill is over the top and Boman Irani frowns through his part. Anupam Kher and Shahana Goswami do bring a sliver of brilliance. And oh! I just remember in time that Sarah Jane Dias makes her debut in a forgettable role that has hardly any dialogues (thanks to dialogue writer Farhan Akhtar’s frugality). She shakes her booty in a cabaret song, canoodles with Abhishek under the linen, and before you take to her presence, is conveniently bumped off.

My advice: skip this game for the other one at Wankhede Stadium.
