Freida Pinto shines at US box office with <i>Rise of the Planet of the Apes</i>
Three years after the release of her debut film Slumdog Millionaire, actress Freida Pinto now has a second blockbuster in her filmography: Rise Of The Planet of the Apes.

The film, released on Friday, is running successfully in the US and raked in a terrific opening amount of $54 million at box office in North America, way above the projected $40 million by trade pundits.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a prequel to the popular Planet of the Apes movies made in the 60s, 70s and even by director Tim Burton in 2001. The new movie has the Oscar nominated James Franco playing a scientist researching in Alzheimer’s cure by doing tests on Chimpanzees. Pinto plays an expert in primate behaviour.

Though the critics haven’t particularly praised Freida Pinto’s performance in the film -- some even calling her a tag-along girlfriend of the protagonist (Franco) -- the film has exceeded expectations at box office and has made $23 million from a few territories outside of North America where it made $54mn.

The collections are further expected to shoot up after the film’s release in UK, Japan and other big markets.

Freida Pinto has so far had four releases, including Miral and You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, both of which weren’t box office hits. She’s now looking forward to the movie Immortals which releases in November this year.
