Director Dibakar Banerjee was apprehensive of including a promotional track in his film Shanghai, but did it for the sake of Emraan Hashmi’s lover boy image. Though ‘Shanghai’ features a pot-bellied Emraan with stained teeth, the love song Khudaaya shows the quintessential romantic Emraan (a handsome one) missing his ladylove. Dibakar himself has shot the video for the song.
Heeding the notion that a hit Emraan love song is a necessity of his films, Dibakar was forced to include a Sufi love song picturised on the actor. Dibakar confirms that it’s true that the music label insisted on the inclusion of the song for promotional purposes of the film, which is a dark political drama.
The love song beautifully highlights Emraan and Kalki Koechlin’s love chemistry. The actor is bartending at a pub and sees a girl who resembles Kalki from the back, but when he goes to the girl to see her face, he realizes that she is not the one he is searching for.
Kalki plays Shalini Sahay in the film, an innocent student-political activist who wants to change the world, and has even written a book; while Emraan, plays Jogi, a small time wheeler-dealer who shoots marriage videos and porn movies. There is a stark difference between the two, but they are drawn to each other with mutual sense of affection and respect. Shekhar Ravjiani has sung this sufi love track and music is by Vishal-Shekhar.
